Janata Dal (United), CPI and CPI ML are campaigning for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Arvind Kejriwal in the elections from the high profile Varanasi seat in Uttar Pradesh to defeat both Congress and BJP. CPIM had announced that it can withdraw its candidate in AAP's support. AAP has emerged the main challenger to BJP in Varanasi.
Support for AAP has gained momentum in all the eight assembly constituencies of Rohaniya,Varanasi North,Varanasi South,Varanasi Cantonment, Sevapuri, Pindra, Shivpur and Ajagara.
But at present Sevapuri MLA is from Samajwadi Party, Shivpur and Ajagara MLAs is from BSP. Except for Pindra which is held by Congress MLA and Rohaniya has Apna Dal MLA all the remaining constituencies have BJP MLAs. Apna Dal is supporting BJP.
Notably, CPIM's Satya Narain Singh won this seat in 1967, Chandra Shekhar of Janata Party won in 1977 and Anil Kumar Shastri of Janata Dal won in 1989. Therefore, it cannot be said that these supporters does not have significant presence in Varanasi.
