Rape? Bengaluru girl bleeds to death, Assam minister's son grilled

Update by pushpa achanta

Here's a update on this horrible tragedy - sorry for delaying it.

After a few calls to the Bangalore Police Commissioner by activists and visits to the hospital by a few journalists, some seasoned activists from Vimochana, the Karnataka Domestic Workers' Union and other organizations, human rights lawyers and writers/journalists like me met police personnel at the Sanjay Nagar police station and the relevant DCP, North Bangalore around 5.30 pm. They all falsely stated that the girl died of dengue fever and that neither the Assamese men nor the mother were detained. We saw the mother at the small Sanjay Nagar station but weren't allowed to meet her until much later (after 8 pm) when she confirmed that the police was harassing her and that she'd contact us after 2 days.

Here's a gist of the DCP's statements during a brief meeting with him (at the Police Commissioner's office on Infantry road) around 7.15. The remarks in bold letters are mine, based on yesterday's observations and today's updates.

1. "The post-mortem report will/may be available tomorrow" - it isn't ready yet
2. "Dengue fever was treated at a private hospital as it was only suspected" - it's unconfirmed currently
3. "The mother was summoned to the Sanjay Nagar police station due to a suspicion" - no details about the suspicion
4. "No one relevant to the case is in police custody" - 1/2 of the Assamese men are apparently in lock-up at the Sanjay Nagar police station
5. "The mother can be met with anytime" - the Sanjay Nagar police personnel refused to reveal her whereabouts

We plan to meet the relevant Investigating Officer over the next 2 days - she's unavailable currently. I'll try updating everyone after that.

In solidarity,
Pushpa

~"The deceased minor was brought dead by her mother to the hospital's emergency room, and the body was shifted to the Forensics Department for the postmortem," said a doctor, requesting anonymity. "I heard that it was a case of rape and there was commotion in the casualty ward. Though she was said to be bleeding, I did not see her," said the doctor.

But quite mysteriously, the city police are now claiming that the girl died of complications due to dengue fever after she was admitted to the casualty ward, and that she was not declared "brought dead".

Sources alleged that the 10-year-old victim was sexually assaulted by more than one person, who were all known to her mother.

The doctors at Ramaiah Hospital suspected something amiss as the victim was brought dead to the hospital with her private parts bleeding.

Based on the mother's complaint and the doctors' suspicion, the Sanjay Nagar police summoned Rituraj Phukan, son of Pranati Phukan, the minister of Handloom & Textiles, Sericulture & Cultural Affairs in Assam, Pallav Phukan and two others and recorded their statements, police at Sanjay Nagar police station said.

Dr Basappa Hugar, who conducted the post-mortem on the victim on Saturday, confirmed that the 10-year-old victim was bleeding from the rectum. ~
