Justice Vinod Kumar Gupta, ex-judge of Patna High Court cremated in Delhi, condolence meeting in Patna

A Full Court Reference at 1:15 P.M. is planned on the March 4, 2025, in the Centenary Hall of Patna High Court to condole the sad demise of Hon'ble Justice Vinod Kumar Gupta, former Judge of Patna High Court, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and Calcutta High Court as well as former Chief Justice of High Court of Jharkhand, High Court of Himachal Pradesh and High Court of Uttarakhand. He was the first Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. Justice Gupta breathed his last in Delhi on February 15, 2025 at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife, Usha Gupta, daughter, Ruchira Gupta, and son, Gaurav Gupta. His last rites were performed at Lodhi Road crematorium in New Delhi.

Justice Gupta was born on September 10, 1947. He was a law graduate from Delhi University. He became a lawyer and registered with the Delhi Bar Council on July 23, 1970. He served as Advocate General of Jammu & Kashmir. He was a visiting Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Jammu. He also served as Senior Central Government Standing Counsel in Jammu & Kashmir High Court. He was actively associated with Bar activities and held the offices of Bar President, Vice-President and Secretary. He was elevated as judge of Jammu & Kashmir High Court on November 7, 1990. He was transferred to Calcutta High Court on May 6, 1996. 

After the formation of the state of Jharkhand, he was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on November 15, 2000 and remained its Chief Justice till March 4, 2003. He delivered judgments on domicile and reservation policies after Jharkhand’s separation from Bihar on November 15, 2000. He was transferred as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in March, 2003. He was transferred to Uttarakhand on February 2, 2008. He retired as a judge on September 9, 2009.
