Prof Kalburgi's killing: Writer, filmmaker Uday Prakash to return Sahitya Akademy award in protest

#Bhopal  #Madhya Pradesh Madhya Pradesh born noted litterateur and filmmaker Uday Prakash has announced to return his Sahitya Akademy award in protest of the killing of eminent Kannada literary figure Prof MM Kalburgi.

Known to be a critic of idol worshiping of Hindu , Kannada scholar Prof Kalburgi was killed inside his home by unidentified assailants on August 30, triggering anguish among the world of literature.

Protesting the killing, Prakash has announced to return Sahitya Akademy award conferred on him by for his creation 'Mohandas' for the year 2010-11.

He brought his decision to public domain by posting it on his FB wall on Friday.

पिछले समय से हमारे देश में लेखकों, कलाकारों, चिंतकों और बौद्धिकों के प्रति जिस तरह का हिंसक, अपमानजनक, अवमानना पूर्ण व्यवहार लगातार हो रहा है, जिसकी ताज़ा कड़ी प्रख्यात लेखक और विचारक तथा साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार से सम्मानित कन्नड़ साहित्यकार श्री कलबुर्गी की मतांध हिंदुत्ववादी अपराधियों द्वारा की गई कायराना और दहशतनाक हत्या है, उसने मेरे जैसे अकेले लेखक को भीतर से हिला दिया है।
अब यह चुप रहने का और मुँह सिल कर सुरक्षित कहीं छुप जाने का पल नहीं है। वर्ना ये ख़तरे बढ़ते जायेंगे।
मैं साहित्यकार कुलबर्गी जी की हत्या के विरोध में 'मोहन दास' नामक कृति पर २०१०-११ में प्रदान किये गये साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार को विनम्रता लेकिन सुचिंतित दृढ़ता के साथ लौटाता हूँ।
अभी गॉंव में हूँ। ७-८ सितंबर तक दिल्ली पहुँचते ही इस संदर्भ में औपचारिक पत्र और राशि भेज दूँगा।
मैं उस निर्णायक मंडल के सदस्य, जिनके कारण 'मोहन दास' को यह पुरस्कार मिला, अशोक वाजपेयी और 10623510_10154630520475231_6724316425713513462_oचित्रा मुद्गल के प्रति आभार व्यक्त करते हुए, यह पुरस्कार वापस करता हूँ।
आप सभी दोस्तों से अपेक्षा है कि आप मेरे इस निर्णय में मेरे साथ बने रहेंगे, पहले की ही तरह।

Revolving his decision around growing disrespect, atrocities and violence against intellectuals in the society, Prakash said that he was in his village and would return his citation and award money once he returned.

He, however, expressed gratitude towards the jury members who were part of announcing his award –Ashok Vajpayee and Chitra Muddal.

The move form Prakash received warm response from the netizens as within seven hours of the post, it was liked by almost 400 visitors of his page who lauded the move from the littérateur and the post was shared over 150 times in the duration.

A poet, writer, journalist and filmmaker, Prakash was born in Sitapur village in Shahdol (now in Anuppur) in Madhya Pradesh in Jan 1, 1952. He had also served as assistant professor at JNU from 1975 to 1981.

His stories 'Uprant' and 'Mohandas' have also translated into films. Prakash himself has directed and wrote several  serials.

His stories have been translated into all the Indian languages and also into several foreign languages including German, French and Japanese.
