Supreme Court places complete process of appointments to High Courts and Supreme Court on its website

According to a press release issued on May 5, 2025, the Supreme Court of India has placed the complete process of appointments to the High Courts and Supreme Court including the role assigned to the High Court Collegium, the role and inputs received from the State Governments, Government of India, and consideration by the Supreme Court Collegium, on its website. 

The proposals approved by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointments as High Court Judges during the period November 9, 2022 to May 5, 2025, including the names, High Court, source – whether from Service or Bar, date of recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium, date of notification by Department of Justice, date of appointment, special category (SC/ST/OBC/Minority/Woman), and whether the candidate is related to any sitting or retired High Court/Supreme Court Judge, have also been uploaded on the Supreme Court's website. The details of proposals approved by Supreme Court Collegium for appointments as High Court Judges from 09.11.2022 to 05.05.2025 reveals that out of 303 candidates, 170 have been approved. Out of the 170, 7 are SCs, 5 are STs, 21 are MBCs/BCs, 28 are women, 23 are minorities and 12 are related to judges. The person recommended for appointment is treated to be related to a sitting/retired Judge of a High Court and/or the Supreme Court, if such Judge is/was his/her (i) Father, (ii) Mother, (iii) Father-in-law, (iv) Mother-in-law, (v) Sister, (vi) Brother, (vii) Sister-in-law, or (viii) Brother-in-law. The names of Ritesh Kumar and Anshul Raj were recommended by the Collegium from Patna Bar on February 20, 2025 but it is awaiting notification by the Union government.

The Full Court of the Supreme Court of India has on April 1, 2025 decided that the statement of assets of the Judges of this Court, shall be placed in the public domain by uploading the same on the website of this Court. Statements of assets of Judges already received are being uploaded. Statement of assets of other Judges will be uploaded as and when the current statement of assets is received.
