Congress MLA Ajay Rai, Varanasi Lok Sabha candidate has 18 % vote share

BJP didn't give ticket to Ajay Rai in the 2009 Lok Sabha election in Varanasi, he quit the BJP and contested on SP ticket. He stood third, securing 1, 23, 874 (18 %) votes. Dr Murli Manohar Joshi stood first but won by only 17,000 votes. Mukhtar Ansari stood second because other opposition parties backed him. After that Ajay Rai joined the Congress. Dr Joshi has left Varanasi and shifted to Kanpur. Earlier, Dr Joshi had left Allahabad.

Rai who is a local MLA says, "Kejriwal ran away (from Delhi) and the other (Modi) will run away (to Vadodara) after winning. In politics, there is a place for the shaheed (martyrs) but not for traitors."

Rai began his career with the BJP's student wing. He graduated from the Kashi Vidyapeeth. 

In 1996, he defeated nine-time sitting CPI MLA Udal from Kolasla (now Pindra), a seat which holds at present.
